The DA in Wards 47 and 48 are very concerned that the residents are experiencing challenges regarding their electricity supply due to disconnections and their inability to pay the reconnection fees.
The residents acknowledge that there have been bridging issues in the past but understand the importance of paying for the services. However as the majority of residents survive on SASSA grants, the reconnection fees of R 6052.00 represents over three months worth of income, an amount that is unattainable for many residents.
We therefore call on Eskom to meet with the residents to discuss the following:
- Waiving the reconnection fee
- Installing pre-paid meter
- Investigating a flat rate for grant recipients for electricity
