The ruling ANC national government’s latest effort to expropriate land without compensation is to change the part of the South African Constitution that protects your property rights via the Constitution 18th Amendment Bill.
This does not just threaten the rights of land owners. The ANC’s proposal would undermine your right to own all kinds of property – be it a car or a house, or even intellectual property.
This ill-advised proposal also does nothing to help landless South Africans who have been let down by the ANC’s failing land reform programme. It only serves to bring about more uncertainty.
Effective land reform is possible without undermining the Constitution.
The DA continues to work towards the settlement of all land restitution cases, release of state land for land reform purposes, increased support to farmers and transference of title deeds – among other interventions.
